I speak/write an awful lot about brows and cannot stress enough the value a well-groomed/shaped brow can add to your face; they frame and highlight the face. The face is the first thing people see; why distract them with an unruly/unkempt or misshaped brow?

If you are trying to grow in sparse brows that have been waxed too much or tweezed to oblivion, try Ardell's Lash and Brow Growth Accelerator. Typically, I recommend an application twice a day (morning and evening) to help accelerate growth.

Lash (and Brow) Tint

The inspiration for this post stems from an inquiry I received on twitter the other day: "I didn't know people dyed their eyelashes as an alternative to wearing mascara @Nicole_Alexis please educate me on this one."

It’s true! Eyelash (and brow) tinting is becoming more and more popular these days. I have been tinting lashes and brows for 4 years and have seen it catch on more within the last year or so.

Most people who have their lashes tinted do it to achieve the look of wearing mascara without the fuss of daily application, washing it off at night and smudging. Typically, those with naturally blonde or light brown lashes get them dyed to add drama and the illusion of thickness. Brow tinting is a great option for someone with fine, pale or sparse; adding dimension and depth. Both are great for those with active lifestyles that involve playing sports, swimming or chasing kids.

Lash/brow tinting is temporary. The most common tinting applications involve the application of vegetable-based dyes in order to minimize irritation to the eye and surrounding area.

Typically, the tinting process takes about ten to fifteen minutes and lasts approximately 3-5 weeks. Pricing typically ranges from as little as $15 to as much as $40.

I have performed both lash and brow tinting safely for years. However, neither is approved at this time by the FDA for obvious reasons. Tinting may cause itching, stinging and in rare cases temporary blindness.

My suggestion is to do your research. Ensure the salon is reputable and is not just introducing tinting as a service because that usually means the esthetician is new to the process.

Jemma Kidd Pro Finish Moisture Tint SPF 20

Strolling through Targe' (Target), I was drawn to a new cosmetic display. It was Jemma Kidd's JK line exclusively for Target. It was one of those lines that made you want to try everything just because of the packaging!

So anyway, I was looking for a new tinted moisturizer to try out. I cannot say it enough...I loooove the packaging.

Moving on...JK Pro Finish Moisture Tint only comes in 3 shades (fair, mid and mid-dark). I wear 03 Mid-Dark, which was the darkest shade that seemed to be available. For those of you who know me, you know I am not dark at all so this is not the best product for darker skin tones.

It was a little heavier than any tinted moisturizer I've ever worn (my usual is Laura Mercier's) and provides a bit more coverage. It also contains some oil so it may not be the best choice for already oily or combination skin (like mine). I do, however love my final look, but I opt not to wear it on the hottest days. I am a huge advocate for using spf EVERYDAY, so I love the fact that is SPF 20. It does minimize your pores and provides a smooth application.

Would I spend another $28 bucks on it? Probably not. I believe it is a great product for someone with dry, fair skin. I will continue to use it as long as I have it in my makeup bag, but will most likely sue my $30 bucks elsewhere.

A Little Sunblock Never Hurt Anyone

A little sunblock never hurt anyone. In fact, the exact opposite is true.
It's officially summer! And with summer comes the propensity to tan and participate in more outdoor activities, and thus, increased exposure to the sun.

I am one who loves a good tan, but I am also very aware of the harmful effects sun exposure can have on your skin...not just during summer months, but year-round. So, i decided to share with you the top 5 things I think you should know about the affects of the sun on the skin and how you can protect yourself.

#1 You can use a daily sunscreen, in moisturizer form to limit sun exposure that can lead to burning, skin cancer, premature aging and wrinkling, hyperpigmentation, etc. Moisturizers containing sunblock come in various formulas from oil-free to light-weight lotions depending on your skin type. Many foundations, lipsticks, hand lotions and powders contain SPF as well.

#2 SPF refers to the Sun Protection Factor in sunscreens. A higher SPF indicates greater protection from the harmful rays of the sun. If you use a sunscreen with an SPF 15, you can be in the sun 15 times longer that you can without sunscreen before burning. The SPF number is also an indicator of how often you should reapply. For example, an SPF of 30 should be reapplied every 30 minutes.

#3 Contrary to popular belief brown girls/guys need sunblock too. As mentioned in a previous post, darker skin contains more melanin, a natural SPF making the chances of burning are less likely, but still possible. It also means that the signs of skin cancer are harder to detect (irregularities in moles, abnormal growths on skin, etc.).

#4 There is a difference between sunblock and sunscreen. Sunscreen contains chemicals that absorb UV rays before they damage the skin. Sunblock contains particles that act as a physical wall against UV rays. Sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes prior to sun exposure and sunblock begins working immediately. Experiment and see what works best for your skin.

#5 Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than 3.5 million cases in two million people are diagnosed annually. Melanoma is now the most common cancer in women age 25 to 29. About 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Up to 90 percent of the visible changes commonly attributed to aging are caused by the sun.

While reading some excerpts from Susie Galvez's (esthetician, makeup artist, cosmetic product formulator, and author of eight books on beauty and lifestyle) book Ooh la la! Perfect Face, I came across this natural, at-home recipe for soothing your skin after being waxed.

Its a pretty simple recipe and I'm sure many of you will thank me for this.

What you will need:
3 cups of chamomile tea
cotton guaze
cotton ball
water (as required)
milk (as required)

1) Make chamomile tea following the instructions on the packet
2) Allow it to cool completely
3) Pour mixture into ice cube tray and freeze
4) Once frozen, wrap in a cotton guaze
5) Gently rub the frozen cube over waxed area for about 5 minutes
6) Dip cotton ball in plain milk and rub over area for 5 minutes
7) Enjoy

I recently had the opportunity to work with one of DC's dopest photographers, Ajani Truth, hautest models, Bentley and stylist, Bianca Cerise.

This shoot went well into the wee hours of the morning...And when I say wee, I mean I didn't get home until nearly 4am. But I am in no way complaining because I love what I do and I am most definitely pleased with the results! Although we were all dead tired, we had lots of fun doing what we do. They are a great team to work with.

Shu Uemura Closes its Doors

When I heard the news, I nearly shed a tear. On Monday, L'Oreal announced it would no longer sell the Shu Uemura brand in the US.
I heart Shu Uemura products and simply adore the iconic lash curler so when I heard that L'Oreal would be closing its doors in the US, I panicked thinking I wouldn't be able to find Shu Uemura products in Nordstrom or Neiman's anymore.

Silly me...While the company will discontinue sales in the US, you can still purchase dramatic lashes, lash curlers, cleansing oils and other cosmetics online. WWD reports that 80% of the company's sales are made in Asia, this announcement comes as no surprise.

Shu Uemura marked his name as one of the great artists in the makeup industry back in the 1950's--trust, he's not done yet.

Today's beauty question came from a new client who came for a facial the other day. Wanna hear it? Here it goes..

Q: What is the difference between day and night creams and is it necessary to use both?

A: Day creams are generally lighter and more suitable under makeup. Most of the day creams sold today include sunscreen. Obviously, sunscreen is not necessary in a night cream. Whether you need to use a night cream is determined by your skin type. Dry or mature skin may benefit from an intensive moisturizing cream at night.

Brows to Die For

If you know me, you know how I feel about brows (and you've probably heard me say this a million times)...They are, dare I say, the most important feature on the face. They shape your face and can make or completely break your look.
Personally, I'm a fan of a fuller, well-groomed brow. Overall, they tend to look more natural.
Damone Roberts, "The Brow King" says "As a whole, the thicker the brow, the softer and prettier a woman can look. The thinner you go, the more severe and sinister you look. Thin eyebrows can make you look mean".

That brings me to the point of this post: Whether you went a little buck with your tweezers, you were butchered at the salon,

you don't have an understanding of what works well for you or maybe you were born with naturally thin brows, there are products out here to help.
While there are plenty of products that boast of facilitating or accelerating hair growth, you still need to practice patience!! Your brows will not grow back overnight so, hang in there.

Beauty Question of the Day

I'm Back! It's been a while, I know...My apologies.
Anywho, I decided to start a series of posts called "Beauty Question of the Day" where I address some of the questions I get from clients, friends and anyone else who may share my obsession.

Disclaimer: I AM NOT A DOCTOR! However, I am a licensed professional (Esthetician and Makeup Artist) with an obsession for beauty and passion for helping people fall in love with themselves. My advice is based strictly on my education and training, my skills and abilities, personal experience and the experiences of my clients.
Now that we have that out of the way, here your first BQOTD and my advice:

Q:Do I have to use skin care products from the same range/product line?

A:You don't have to use products from the same line. However, many ranges are formulated with ingredients that work together. This ensures that you are getting enough of the good ingredients and not doubling-up on those that are potentially irritating. If mixing and matching works for you, I say, go with that.

Homemade Masks for Every Skin Type

I was on twitter the other day and saw someone tweet about a mask they made at home. I wish I could remember who it was so I could give them credit for putting this thought in my head. In any event, the post sent me digging through my papers from esthetics school to locate some recipes for masks we made while in class. I thought they were perfect, especially during these tough economic times. Most of the ingredients you can find in your fridge or your cupboard.
Be sure to apply all masks to clean skin.

Oily Skin

Strawberries have great stringent properties and will help cleanse oily skin without irritation. For an easy face mask, blend the following ingredients:

½ tsp lemon juice
1 egg white
1 tsp honey
½ cup strawberries

Leave on cleansed face for 10 minutes and rinse

Dry Skin

Honey and avocados are particularly rich in moisturizing properties. Combine the following:

½ avocado
¼ cup of honey

Apply and leave on for 5 minutes, removing with washcloth and lukewarm water.

Combination Skin

A rose-based mask is a superb balancing treatment for combo skin

1 tbsp
1 tbsp of rosewater
1 tbsp of natural yogurt
1 tbsp honey

Wash rose petals in water. Soak for a few minutes and crush them in a bowl. Add others ingredients and mix well. Apply to skin and leave on for 5 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water.

Sensitive Skin

This mask helps reduce irritation and is also great for sun-damaged skin

1 cup natural yogurt
½ cup oatmeal

Blend yogurt and oatmeal together. Mix well and apply to skin for ten minutes. Rinse off with warm water.

Maturing Skin

Sugar is a great exfoliant as it removes dead skin cells without drying skin.

2 tbsp sugar
3 tbsp warm water

Mix sugar in warm water (in undissolved form, the granules can tear the skin which allow moisture to leak out). Apply to the face and leave on for 5 minutes, then very gently massage around skin. Rinse well.

Ever wonder what all of those technical terms on your products mean?

Lately, I've had many of my clients come to me confused about beauty product terminology, so I decided to create a list of the most commonly used terms to help you all break through the lingo.

Here's a list of some of the most common terms to help you determine how a particular product is benefiting you and your skin:

Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHAs): Products containing AHAs, slough off dead skin cells to reveal smoother, younger-looking skin underneath.

Antioxidants: Help the skin by neutralizing molecules called free radicals that destroy the skin. Ingredients like Vitamins C, A and E, green tea, copper, grapeseed and kinetin are antioxidants.

Aqua: It's plain water. Normally the number-one product on ingredient listings and is vital for healthy skin.

Beta-Hydroxy Acids (BHAs): BHAs work in the same way as AHAs but are less irritating. The most commonly used BHA is salycilic acid, which is also good for fighting bacteria on the skin.

Botanicals: Ingredients from a natural source (usually plants) believed to have healing or regenerating powers on the skin--like aloe vera, gingko and ginseng.

Coenzyme Q10: a nutrient found in every cell in our body. Used as a wrinkle-buster in products.

Emollients: Found in moisturizers, emollients help to protect the skin by reinforcing the moisture barrier in the lower layer of the skin.

Essential Oils: Plant oils most commonly used in aromatherapy and to scent products. Lavendar is one of the most commonly used in products as it soothes irritation.

Humectants: Attract moisture to the skin from the air.

Hypoallergenics: Ingredients shown to be least likely to cause allergic reactions.

Liposomes: Liposomes aren't ingredients, but are ways to deliver ingredients deeper into the skin.

Mattifyers: Ingredients like witch hazel or corn starch which soak up oil on the skin.

Non-Comedogenics: Ingredients shown to be less likely to clog pores.

Retinols: Another word for products made from Vitamin A. Retinols are powerful antioxidants and some (prescriptions: Retin A and Retinova) have been shown to dramatically reduce skin damage from ultraviolet rays.

Sun Protection Factors (SPF): Most important ingredient in any skin care product. SPF blocks harmful and aging ultra violet rays. The higher the SPF, the more protection you get from the sun.

Top 5 Tips for Dry Skin

These tips are especially useful during the winter months.

Cleanse your skin only once at the end of the day. This will remove dirt and grime but prevent further drying. In the morning, use water and a facial moisturizer.

2) Exfoliation is ESSENTIAL. When choosing your facial scrub, avoid those made with seeds or salt as they have sharp edges which may tear dry skin.

3) Limit exposure to really hot water. It dries out parched skin.

4) Never dry your skin completely. One of the best ways to hydrate your skin is to pat it with a towel after washing and apply moisturizer to seal in the extra moisture.

5) A telltale sign of deficiency of essential fatty acids is dry skin. Increase your intake of oily fish or take a supplement.

Winter Weather Skin Care

This winter has got to be the "Coldest Winter Ever"! I'm convinced. The cold, frigid air and brisk winds usually require a heightened level of skin care.

The other day, I lotioned up as I normally do, got dressed for work and headed to the car. By the time I got in the car, my hands were ashy! Ugh. So unlady-like. My normal application of Jergens Cherry Almond Scent or Warm Vanilla Sugar Bath & Body Works Body Butter didnt seem to be standing up to Jack Frost. There are other products I use in times like these (like good old fashioned, Palmer's Coco Butter), but I decided to ask my followers on twitter to see what works best for them.
Around noon, I asked my followers to do an ash check :) by lifting up a pants leg or sleeve to check for dry skin. Those who weren't covered in scales, I asked to submit their favorite/most effective skin care and lip products for combating winter weather.

Applying False Lashes

I'm not a big lash wearer, but I was in Miami for a week with a group of lovely ladies and most of them could not go anywhere without their lashes. Some applied the lashes themselves, while others applied them for a fellow lash fiend. With all of this lash-love going around, I decided to do a mini tutorial on application.

Strip lashes come in various styles, from natural to fashion, depending on the look you are trying to achieve.
I apply lashes on people all the time, but I asked my cousin (who wears strip lashes practically everyday) to see if her technique for applying them on herself differs any from how I apply them on others...not so much.

Here are a few tips if you like the look of strip lashes but were never quite sure how to apply them:

Step 1:
You should use the strip lash to measure the width of the lid and trim the lash to fit.
Step 2:
Next, apply your makeup, including eye liner.
Step 3:
Apply glue to the base of the false lash and let it set for about 10 seconds so the glue becomes tacky. The wetter the glue, the longer the lashes will take to adhere. Use eyeliner as a guide to apply lash as close to lash line as possible. You can use tweezers or your hands to apply the lash--whichever is easiest.
Please only use non-professional grade glue (ie. Duo, Duralash, Ardell, Lash Grip), which is meant for short term where-- an event or no longer than a day. Glue should dry clear.

If you are into a more natural look, individual lashes/clusters are probably your best bet:

Step 1:
Apply your makeup.
Step 2:
Squeeze a small amount of glue onto the plastic container. Then, using tweezers, pick up a lash cluster and dip into glue. Again, wait about 10 seconds before attempting to apply lash. As mentioned before, this glue is meant for short-term wear.
Step 3:
Begin by putting 1 lash cluster at the outer corner of one eye. Place it as close to your lash line as possible. Trying to angle it at the same angle as your lashes, so they blend well. Apply one or two lashes on one eye, then apply the same amount to the other eye. This technique helps lashes look symmetrical on each eye. Move from the outside of the eye inward. Start with three or four clusters and add more if you want extra drama.

Once the glue is dry, you are ready for the world!

Lashes can be removed with soap and water.

Practice makes perfect. I don't advise "practicing" lash application right before you are headed to a big event.

Making White Eyeliner Work for You

White eyeliner should be used with care. It can brighten the eyes or draw just the right amount of negative attention.

I was prompted to do this post by a reader who urged me to address those who where white liner in its starkest form-- a bright white line drawn across the upper lid (or bright white shadow under the brow) usually, applied with no real technique or consideration for shade or complexion.Unlike my dear reader, I am not completely opposed to the use white liner. As with anything, if used correctly, white liner can give the illusion of wider eyes and make the per son appear more alert.

Here's how to make white eyeliner work for your good...(I will only address eyes and brows, but there are many other uses)

To brighten the eyes

Lightly trace the inside of the lower rim (or the waterline) with the pencil (or on lower lash line). *For a more obvious effect, line the upper lash line as well. (Please be careful here, folks)

By lightly sweeping across the line with a cotton swab, sponge tip or pencil brush, you can tone it down. Using a white, pale gold or silver powder eyeshadow sets the pencil line to brighten the eyes.

As a base for eyeshadows

Using the liner underneath an eyeshadow provides longevity, keeps shadow colors true and makes colors more vivid.

As a highlight for the brows

By drawing a very thin line right under the eyebrow and stamping it afterwards, the liner can highlight the shape of the brow and give your face an illuminated effect. I recommend variations of pearl, pink-white or butter (again, depending on complexion and desired look)

As a base for the brows

If you ever want to change the shape of your brows without actually removing hair, a white eyeliner can camouflage the unwanted hair. Color over the area with the liner and go over with concealer or foundation.

* Please consider the shade of the liner and whether it compliments your complexion. A pure matte white may be too distracting on certain skin tones. Consider MAC Fluidline Gel Liner in Frostlite (off-white shade with reflective hints of gold) like MAC Powerpoint Eye Pencil Gilded White or other moderate gold-tinged whites, which work well on most skintones. Other options include beiges like Make Up For Ever (MUFE) Pearly Waterproof Eye Shadow Pencil in 13 Iridescent Beige , together with pale pinks such as Shu Uemura ME Pink, are nice options too.

Meet the Designer...Mychael Knight

I have not done a fashion related post in quite some time, but when I heard Mychael Knight (from season 3 of Project Runway) would be appearing on the show's upcoming "All-Star Challenge", I HAD to do a post. If you ever watched the season with Mychael he was probably one of your favs, as he is undoubtedly one of mine. Mychael's personality was always relaxed and laid-back, and his designs were reflective of his attitude. Although his designs had a flare of sexy chic, they always looked extremely comfortable and wearable.

Mychael's design and styling skills have been sought after by the likes of Patti LaBelle, Jennifer Hudson, Keri Hilson, and Kim Porter and have been featured in a variety of print publications including Allure, Atlanta PEACH, KING, Upscale, Ebony, Black Enterprise and His resume doesn't stop there. He has a signature unisex fragrance MAJK, his signature unisex fragrance, Monsieur, a men's furnishings label, and Kitty's Litter, a burlesque performance group and his own line bearing his namesake.

Ok, its been a minute, but I'm back with a mah-velous product to share. I was so excited when I found out about this palette because it has everything you need to create a daytime or an evening look for your bride (or yourself).

Waxing: Prep and After Care

Body waxing has increased in popularity in recent years. With bathing suit season in full swing, women are turning to waxing to clean the bikini line and other areas.
Many people who have never been waxed are extremely reluctant. While waxing isn't completely pain-free, there are ways to prepare yourself before going in.

Preparing for your appointment

1) Hair must be 1/4''-1/2'' long, or at least 3 weeks of growth. If your hair is too short the wax cannot grip the hair to pull it out. If your hair is too long, the hair will break and the service will be less comfortable. It is a good idea to shave three weeks before your appointment or trim your hair just prior to your appointment.

2) Depending on your tolerance for pain, it may be a good idea to take ibuprofen or use a numbing cream, like No Scream Cream.

3) In he days prior to your wax, prep the area to be waxed by exfoliating using a loofah or exfoliating glove and/or an exfoliating body wash. Exfoliating will open your hair follicles for hair removal.

After Care

1) I always tell my my clients to exfoliate after waxing to help prevent ingrown hairs. I recommend waiting at least 48 hours.

2) Exfoliation in conjunction with razor/hair bump solution will help to reduce/prevent ingrown hairs. In a previous post I featured MiN New York Razor Bump Treatment. I have used Tend Skin for years, but I just purchased Skin Tight Ladies Razor Bump Solution.

3) Avoid tight clothes, sun, chlorine, steam, hot water, deodorant and scrubs for about 12 hours after waxing. Some redness, small spots or bumps are normal but should subside in a few hours.

I swear by waxing and wouldn't have it any other way, from legs to underarms to bikini, it's coming off and I always love the results.

Is Skin Cancer Color Blind?

I'm packing my bags to head off to sunny South Beach, Miami.
Shades, check; Swimsuit, check; Sunscreen, CHECK!

Since skin cancer is the most common of all cancers, I make sure to use sunscreen/spf infused products liberally. Studies show that daily use of sunscreens can reduce your chances of developing some forms of skin cancer.
A few years ago, I noticed some discoloration and change in shape in a mole on my side. Since I learned about the various types of skin cancer in esthetics school, I was a bit worried. I had a biopsy and thank heavens, everything came back ok. But ever since, I make sure I protect my skin.

True or False: Fair skinned-people are the only ones subject to skin cancer resulting from damage from the sun?
False. Darker skin contains more melanin which is a natural skin protector factor (SPF) that helps keep the skin from burning. However, it only means that someone with a darker skin tone filters twice as much as someone with paler skin. It also means that the signs of skin cancer are harder to detect (irregularities in moles, abnomal growths on skin, etc.).
Skin cancer is a highly preventable disease, so why not do what you can to prevent it?
Regardless how light (or dark) your skin is, I urge you to use spf products regularly.

When selecting a sunscreen, look for products with an SPF 15 or greater that blocks both UVA and UVB rays.

Well, I know I'm a bit late posting as its been a week since I died and went to heaven...Makeup Heaven, that is. Where is this place of pure Utopia, you ask? The Powder Group's Makeup Show NY. If you are unfamiliar with the show, its a 2 day convention full of fabulous speakers, seminars (on everything from contouring to brows) and of course, vendors (I spent a fortune, but its all worth it) in the makeup industry.

Shadow Shields

If you're an eyeshadow enthusiast, I'm pretty sure you've had your run in with a set of "raccoon eyes".

MUFE Flash Color

My latest discovery is Makeup Forever's Flash Color. I got super excited when I found them and purchased a bunch from Sephora (should've waited bc there's a palette of 12 colors for $95). Either way, I am extremely pleased with this product. They are vibrant cream-based colors that can be used on the eyes, cheeks and lips or even as a base for powder shadow or glitter. I used them as shadow and face paint during a recent shoot (pics will come soon).

The texture is super creamy so it glides on and blends effortlessly. The pigmentation is excellent so you don't need much. I did find, however, that it does take a few minutes to dry and you need to make sure you are using the right primer underneath. (I've also found that they they work fine without a primer). I was really impressed with the staying power of the pigments. The color will last a good 8+ hr day when set with your favorite eyeshadow.

I simply love this product.

Took another trip to Sephora (my playground) this past Friday. I was looking for a new skin care line to test out and had heard rave reviews about Juice Beauty so I decided to give it a try.
If you've never heard of Juice Beauty, it's a skincare line of products that are 95% certified organic in a 100% organic juice base. The creators of JB, believe that a healthy, organic lifestyle not only applies to what we eat but also, what we put on our face and bodies.
I have combination/oily skin so the Organics to Clear Skin 30 day kit was the regimen of choice. The kit includes Cleansing Gel (for am & pm use), Sensitive Green Apple Peel (for use once a week), Blemish Clearing Serum (for am & pm use) and an Oil-Free Moisturzer (am use)(Oh, and an eco-bamboo headband).

It's important to remember that because these are organic pproducts that most will be more potent that your normal products and can affect everyone differently.
I used the kit for the first time last night and when I woke in the am, my skin looked refreshed. I am excited to see how JB will work for me. I'll do a check-in in 30 days to let you guys know how things turn out with me and JB.

Apparently, J&D think "Everything should taste like bacon", but I don't think I'd go this far.

J&Ds bacon flavored lip balm is probably the looniest lip balm Ive seen in forever. In fact, its probably even loonier given the current swine flu pandemic. (bet Oprah didn't expect this when she featured the product on her show a couple weeks ago)

Prepped & Primed

A few posts ago, I let you all in on one of my affordable oil control secrets. Well, while on my latest play date with Sephora, I decided to try Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer. I must say, I'm in love.

Photo Finish provides the perfect canvas for makeup application. I was amazed at how smooth my concelaer/foundation glided on. It's a little more expensive than the Iman primer (I still love this product too), but its also oil-free and gives you the matte, photo-ready finish, so I think, its well worth what I paid.

I went to Target the other day to pick up a few things and was surprised at what i saw. Target has partnered with Karen Erickson and Vicki Beamon to launch a limited-edition jewelry collection, Erickson Beamon for Target.
Erickson Beamon is known for adding bling to such celebs as Madonna and Nicole Kidman. Erickson Beamon jewelry usually has a $400 plus price tag, however the Target line is equally adorable but at a more wallet-friendly price.
The collection is full of statements but you'll only have until June 26, 2009 to make yours.

Stiletto Workout...Love It

June Ambrose, celebrity stylist is responsible for the looks behind many of today's artists, but has decided to come out of the wardrobe closet for a min and introduce the Stiletto Workout!

I tried the nine minute version that is posted on youtube.com and I'm happy to say I didn't break my neck or any other bones. It was a nice "lil" workout...felt a bit of a burn in my thighs and buttocks but I can imagine what the full length version will do.

I love the concept bc you can still look sexy (if you can manage to keep our balance) and still strengthen all those muscles necessary to strut your stuff.

Smashbox Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder

I'll admit, April snuck up on me...apologies for not posting sooner.

Anyway, this morning as I put on my face, I realized just how much I love my Smashbox Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder (I briefly mentioned it in the makeup bag must haves post). So much so that I'm making it April's product of the month (oh, i think I'm gonna TRY to have maybe a product of the week, bc there are lots I'd like to share). Ok, I'm done rambling...back to Halo.

I love this powder, first because it does not scream "look at me, I have on makeup!". Second, it gives you a completely breathable, natural look that doesn't feel like you've got stuff caked on. It does a great job with giving your skin an even tone, too. You can put as much or as little as you like for sheer to nearly full coverage. It'll give you a nice glow.

Oh, and it comes with a mini kabuki brush...great for touch-ups or for people like me who never have enough time to finish the routine before heading off to work.

2009 BET Rip the Runway Hosts: Joy Bryant & Derek Luke looked Fab.

First Lady of Style, stylist, June Ambrose vetoed the baggy jean for men. Gentlemen,READ AND HEED, PLEASE! A fitted jean is much sexier on a man. Trash the bag-gy jeans.

This year, several designers were granted the opportunity to showcase their work during urban runway event, BETs Rip the Runway.

Each designer brought a different flair to the runway, but who held true to the name? Johnny Vincent Swimwear, TI's Akoo Jeans and Tees, Korto of Project Runway, Plus sized designs from Douglas Says, Monif C or Sportswear from Byron Lars? You be the judge.

My Makeup Bag Must-Haves

I've received several requests from folks wondering exactly what's in my makeup bag. So, here are my essentials...

My daily skin care regimen consists of cleansing with Intuit Set Me Free Gel Cleanser (or Aura Oxygen Foaming Gel Cleanser) and Clarisonic (which also exfoliates) , followed by Intuit Stripper toner and Anytime, Anywhere moistuizer (or Yes to Carrots, C thru the Night Cream at night to combat dryness).
After moisturizing, I use Murad 2% salicylic acid Acne Treatment Concealer to heal and conceal those "hormonal" nuisances.
Smashbox Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder foundation provides a breathable, natural everyday look.

I curl my lashes with Sephora's lash curler and add some pop with MAC zoom lash. This combo works wonders, especially on those days when I'm not wearing eyeshadow.

Covergirl Brow and Eye Makers in midnight brown allow me to add natural-looking definition in my brows. An added bonus is that the pencil is CHEAP and comes in a pack of 2.

I tweeze my brows in between waxes with my pink (of course) tweezerman slanted tweezers.

MAC Lip Conditioner spf 15 and Bliss High Intensity hand cream keep my lips and hands moisturized.

First Lady Fashionista

The cover of March issue of Vogue features a familiar, yet surprising face. Michelle Obama will grace the cover as only the second First Lady to do so.

Since Lou Hoover, every First Lady has been featured in the high-fashion magazine, but only Hilary Clinton and Michelle have been the face of Vogue. She appears wearing a magenta silk sheath dress by Jason Wu, the same designer of her inaugural gown.
In addition to discussing fashion (of course), Andre Leon Talley talks with Michelle about how she will balance being First Lady and First Mom AND also her new role as First Lady of Fashion. OMG! Make Me a SuperModel

This is so random, but I am sitting here watching a rerun of the second season of Make Me a Super Model on Bravo tv. I am appalled. I am watching the contestant submission and cannot believe what I see...a girl holding up her crusty feet to reveal her "anklet" (uhhh, yes, she was on house arrest). She says that trouble always seems to find her, but is hopeful she will be free by the time the show receives her tape. WHAT IN THE WORLD? I had to share.

The Skinny (for men). Hot or NOT?

“I can’t wear skinny jeans ‘cause my knot don’t fit” says Jay-Z in T.I.’s “Swagger Like Us”.

In my opinion, even if all you have is pocket change, skinny jeans for men are NOT, I repeat, NOT HOT.
Despite what the runway and entertainment culture is telling us, the average guy (that’s you) cannot and should not try to pull this off. I was glad to learn during my daily email convo with the girls that they all agreed.
A very “distressed” (her word, not mine), Shon, started the “Thought of the Day” with “Skinny jeans…Hot or Not? For regular men, not celebs”. The outpour of disapproving comments began:

Me: Not feeling it at all. Now, that does not mean they have to be falling off one’s behind either. There is a happy medium. Please find it!

Shon: I am noticing an alarming and disturbing trend and someone needs to set these men straight. First of all, they need to know that skinny jeans should not be junk-revealing. Nor should they cut off the circulation at your ankles…you should not see the entire outline of a man’s leg through his jeans—that is just wrong. Most men should stay away from skinny altogether as it is expert level difficulty to pull off.

Funny, but oh so true.

Nae chimes in: Just because it’s a fashion trend doesn’t mean it’s for everyone. If kilts become trendy will we have to look forward to men wearing skirts?

Thanks to my bff, Alli, here’s a rule of thumb- a man’s jeans should be one size larger than his dress pants.

There is a thin line between a finely fitted pair of jeans and a pair that could be mistaken for spandex. Whatever you do, don’t cross it!

Guys, here are a few questions you should ask yourself before considering this trend.
Should my jeans really be clinging onto my legs like spandex?
Am I risking infertility to follow a trend that has gone horribly wrong?
Should my jeans really be as tight as my girlfriend’s?
How long will it take me to get in/out of these things?
Will the world (and my groin) thank me if I don’t put these on?

At the end of the day, it’s all about personal preference. If you believe you are part of the small population of individuals who can pull this off and you can rest well with the answers to these questions, then by all means…skinny.

'09 Spring/Summer Trends for Women

If you're like me, you're so over winter; the dry skin, bundles of clothes, high gas/electric bill and everything else that goes along with it.
Hopefully, spring will come more sooner than later but to help make that transition- whenever it arrives, here are some of the spring/summer trends that hit the runway this year.

Color
While neautrals (black, white and nude) are staples this spring, a big runway hit are those colors that remind me of 2 of my favorite things--ice cream and makeup! From bright turquoise, yellow and fuschia to pale blush, peach and lilac (team these with greys)...I'm ready for the weather to break!

Accessories

Next season's accessories are all about making a statement...Bib-inspried necklaces, cocktail rings, big bangles and earrings do exactly that! I love it.

Ruffles & Bows
Ruffled dresses and bowed bodices. You can go big with these looks or keep them simple, subtle and sexy.

Patterns
The butterfly was probably the most prominent of the patterns on the runway. The key with this one is to remain elegant and sophisticated and not too girly. If you aren't into the butterfly effect, there are plenty of other patterns to choose from.

While I'm totally in love with most of the predicted trends, there are some that I'm not too fond of...

Mid-riffs

Apparently, exposing your stomach is coming back. Well, no matter how flat my stomach gets, I think I'll have to pass on this one. In my opinion, certain things are a lot sexier /classier when you can leave a little to the imagination. But hey, that's just me.

The boyfriend jean

Like the skinny jean for men, this one has the potential of going horribly wrong...They say you're supposed to be able to grab a pair of your boyfriend's jeans and throw them on. Not sure if they mean literally, but I tried it because I didn't have a change of clothes (funny, right? I'm lol too) and it was the most ridiculous sight I had ever seen.

Chanel Iman

I first caught a glimpse of Chanel Iman on a rerun of the Tyra Banks Show's Celebration of the release of Vogue Italia's first Black Model Issue. She was beautiful and seemed to be so humble.

Born in the "A" in 1989 and raised in CA, Chanel Iman made her debut on the fashion scene when she placed 3rd in Ford Models Supermodels of the World competition. She graced the runway for the first time in 2006 for high-end designers like DKNY and Custo Barcelona. Since then she has modeled for other top designers like Vera Wang, Diane von Fürstenberg and Marc Jacobs (to name a few) and is swiftly making a name for herself in the industry.

Today I went shopping for a dress for an inaugural celebration. Didn't find a dress, but I found the MAC store!
Someone should've stopped me at the door, or maybe I should've stopped myself! I always go crazy, I mean really crazy (I may need to sit on someone's couch) and today was no different. I'm trying to decide if this was the most damage I've ever done in that freakin' store at one time.
Now MAC is always coming out with some new collection and I normally buy a few products from most of them. Today, I had a talk with myself: "Self, go in and get only what you came for" (studio fix liquid foundation and mineralize powder). (See I told you I go crazy in this place). I did a decent job avoiding the new Brunette, Blonde, Redhead collection, but not such a good job with everything else.
I got the foundation and powder I came for-- add to that 3 blush palettes, 6 shadow palettes, 4 lipsticks, 2 lipglasses and a # 226 brush.
